After nearly two decades of waiting, Erzeni claimed the top honours from the Albanian men’s Volleyball national league. The team from the small town of Shijak beat Partizani in the championship series, after two weeks of dramatic and very exciting matches.
Erzeni won three out of four matches, but the two teams played as many as three tiebreaks, thus accounting for additional drama and excitement for their respective fans. This is the fourth time that the team currently coached by Arben Sako has taken the national league title, the last time dating back to 19 years ago, so Erzeni looked extremely motivated to secure they would emerge victorious in the end.
Partizani, a team based in Tirana, failed to use their chances as they dissipated a 2-1 lead in the first and second matchup as well, before losing 2-3 to Erzeni. Partizani mobilised their forces for the third round where they won 3-2, thus re-opening the battle for the title.
However, in front of a crowd that had filled the local sports hall to full capacity, Erzeni did not fail in the fourth round, thus celebrating the title with their fans. “We believed in ourselves and finally managed to win the championship. This title belongs to all the fans who have been supporting us in this championship series and have been waiting for such a triumph for many years. Moreover, I want to thank the team for their commitment, as they played with a lot of character and finally triumphed with the victory,” said Arben Sako, the head coach of Erzeni.
