|Viva Communications of Grupo Telemicro has been granted by NORCECA Volleyball Confederation the broadcasting television rights in the national territory of the Dominican Republic for the XVII Viva Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup.
The annual competition runs from July 6 to 15 with a rest day after the conclusion of the preliminary pool phase.
The twelve-team intercontinental event gather together the top teams from the South America and NORCECA Confederations and is a qualifier event to the XVIII Pan American Games to take place in Lima. Peru next year.
The XVII Viva Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup features teams from Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela representing South America and from United States, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and Mexico of NORCECA.
The Organizing Committee is presided over by Major General of Dominican Air Force Elvis Marcelino Pérez Feliz who occupied the same role and functions when the event also was played in Santo Domingo in 2016.
All the matches of the tournament –six per day- will be contested at the Volleyball Place “Prof. Ricardo Gioriber Arias”.
Teams will be divided into three pools of four teams who will compete under a round-robin format. After a rest day, the top two ranked team will earn a direct ticket to the semifinals and the teams placed second will play crossed matches in the quarterfinals.
United States are the defending champions having defeated Dominican Republic for the gold medal last year in Peru. Puerto Rico won the bronze medal.
In the history of the event, United States lead with five titles, followed by Cuba and Dominican Republic each with four and Brazil with three. The Dominican Republic leads in podium positions with 15.
